Tagger out on bail again

A Napa Superior Court Judge earlier this week set bail for a teen accused of tagging numerous places in Napa.

Despite the $10,000 cost for each of the two cases against her, Jena Danielle Cloud made bail and was released. Her preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 15.
Cloud, 19, along with Alvin Maurice Thomas, 20, was arrested last week on felony vandalism and possession of tools used for graffiti. She was released by the court on her own recognizance. Terms of that release stated she was not to possess any items that could be used for tagging or graffiti. However her freedom was short lived when on July 31, Napa police served a search warrant at her residence in the 1500 block of Menlo Avenue and found markers and pens used for tagging in Cloud’s bedroom.

Investigators also found a wallet and identification that did not belong to Cloud in her bedroom, police said earlier.
After a search of her home, officers took Cloud into custody and booked her into the county jail. On Tuesday she was arraigned on charges filed by the district attorney’s office of felony receiving stolen property, misdemeanor possession of tools used for graffiti, petty theft of lost property and a special allegation of committing a felony while out on bail.

Thomas is being held in the county jail on $70,000. His preliminary is set for Aug. 8.
If found guilty of the charges, Cloud and Thomas most likely will not have much free time on their hands.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently signed into a law a bill that mandates those convicted of felony graffiti vandalism to clean up graffiti and tagging, possibly to maintain it for one year.

This is welcome news for the city of Napa, where only one person is assigned to clean graffiti throughout the entire city.

The court has the power to not order anyone to clean graffiti from places that could pose a danger, such as removing graffiti from signs on freeway overpasses.

" Well, it sounds like little miss tagger has been quite busy doing other things besides just graffiting her political views on other people's properties. I do wonder how she will justify these other charges against her?? "

" Jena,

I may have no respect for someone that has done some of the things you have done, but if you were to humble yourself, apologize and make restitution (No matter what that entails), doing the right thing from here on out... Now THAT would definitely be something to be admired and respected.

It takes a lot of maturity, courage and humility to admit to ones mistakes, seek to make restitution and never make the same mistakes again.

My wish is that you would somehow find it within yourself to learn from all of this, maturely and courageously accept the consequences of your actions and then press on, becoming the best person you can possibly be.

All is not lost. You have a lot of life ahead of you. Go live it well. "

" Its sad she got out. She should have been left in there a bit longer.

The saddest thing is she wont learn a thing. I guarentee she will be stupid enough to continue Tagging. I went to school with her, and She wont even change face.

Oh well, some people are just unfortunate "

" This reminds me of the Will Ferrell skit where the city worker just sprayed "is a loser" under the Taggers sprayed name.

Was this ever a cool thing to do? "

" As I read the story; 1. Who was the Judge and why would he/she allow a ricdevist make bail? Tha mount of discussion about "tagging" has been discussed quite a lot over the last few weeks. It is a clear and costly problem that should be discouraged. Allowing a perpetrator to walk out on bail is not a means of reducing or eliminating this mattr. Law and the D.As office did their job. It seem the judicial people do not appreciate their obligation to The People. "

" Wow... good job Mom.. instead of teaching your daughter a thing or two and leaving her in jail to do some thinking about her behavior... you fork out $10,000 to get her out.
Now I think I do believe Jena when she says her Mom is proud of her...
Talk about enabling.... "

Some of our other not so up-standing citizens in NCDC will tune up that attitude hopefully.I hope other taggers are watching what goes on with these two. "

" I think some people are blowing these crimes wayyy out of proportion. Should she be held accountable? Yes. Is she a violent murderer? No. Let the punishment fit the crime, and by the comments some people have made you would think this young woman killed a family member.

The young woman in question has a lot of growing up to do, but anything more than a few months in county jail is too much. Let's keep it in perspective. I think the negative attention received in the paper may be enough to give this girl a wake up call, but let's not tar and feather her. "

Maybe is she spray paints your property, you will see why so many people are mad.I have had to clean it off my business twice. She deserves the maximum the judge can give for the crimes she is charged with. "

" elb - well written. Constructive, guiding, positive... should we coddle taggers and vandals? No. Jena Cloud will face the charges against her and she has a choice. My hope is that our community will let her pay the price of her mistake and then encourage her (as elb does) to change her life.

Should we reasonably expect people to change for the better if the blogging community is going to shoot arrows at the very people we say we want to stop harming our community?

When I was 17 years old I was on a similar track - though never vandalized property. Thankfully, some people really encouraged me to go back to school and turn my life around, which I did. But I wonder... if it were not for those people who continually encouraged me to better myself... I wonder where I would be today.

Wishing you a good life Jena. You can have a great life if you are willing to change and continue your education. "

" Marine 1/1: I did read the comments Jena made last week. She deserves to be punished for her crimes, but I don't think the criticism for the bail amount is warranted. If she made bail, she is free to go. I get the sense that some people expected the bail to be higher. She isn't a violent criminal, I have absolutely no problem with the bail set by the court.

She needs a little bit of jail time for this. A couple months probably would do the trick. I just think the lynch mob attitude is unfair and that we all should give the legal system an opportunity to work.

This girl is 19 years old, old enough to know better, but not mature enough to realize the impact of her crimes. I really think some of the commenters (you are not bloggers BTW) need keep the scope of the crime in perspective. "

" Marine 1/1: I'm sorry your property was vandalized. I would furious if my property was vandalized. However, the bail amount was fair. As I said earlier, IMO she does need a jail time for this, but let's be fair about it and not liken her to Al Capone.

Speaking of vandals, why hasn't Napa PD solved the crime spree earlier in the summer? Those houligans deserve a far stiffer penalty! "

Dwayne wrote on Aug 6, 2008 2:23 PM:

" Jena's defiant attitude indicated she's already been coddled enough, and it obviously hasn't worked. When a kid goes wrong, and you try and help them only to be told to 'shove it' like she did here, then more drastic measures must be taken. If she were 10 she should get a whippin' for that, but since she's 19, let the system deal with her. Some time in the slammer, followed by a year of community service should be the next step. Belligerence always amplifies the level of the crime. "

Yes, because time in the Napa County Hilton is hard time. Please spare us your her crime is nothing. Criminals have to start somewhere, she doesnt sound the least bit remourseful nor does she seem to want to take any accountability. She gets zero sympathy from me and I hope that I see her out on the streets soon cleaning up other peoples work. See hoe much she laughs then. "

" How about we set up a fund for Ms. Cloud’s artistic expression. I’ll donate $20.00 in the form of a Home Depot gift card to be used specifically for spray paint. It would be worth it for the laugh I would get seeing her take another trip to the slammer. I would bet she would be just dumb enough to take the bait too. "
